The iPod touch (Fifth Generation), released in 2012, brought a major design refresh to the iPod touch, featuring a larger, 4 inch Retina display, the Lightning connector, a camera flash, as well as a new aluminum housing available in several colors. It shipped with the, at the time, brand new Apple EarPods (albeit without an in-line remote control and microphone), and came with a wrist strap, known as the iPod loop.

A rather unique 16GB version was quietly released on May 30th, 2013. It lacked the rear-facing "iSight" camera, the iPod loop, and was only available in silver and black colour. Rather than having a white screen with colour-matching buttons and branding, this iPod shipped with a black screen with black buttons and branding. This version sold for $229 and was replaced on June 26th, 2014 by a new 16GB model that was visually identical to its 32GB and 64GB counterparts.

In 2014, Apple also changed the pricing for the iPod touch line. The 16GB model dropped from $229 to $199 (and also refreshed), the 32GB model from $299 to $249, and the 64GB model from $399 to $299. Additionally, Apple dropped the Slate Black color in favor of the Space Gray color from the iPhone 5s.

The 32GB and 64GB variants of this iPod shipped with iOS 6.0 at launch, with the 2013 16GB model shipping with iOS 6.1.3 and the 2014 revision shipping with iOS 7.1.2. All models of the 5th generation iPod touch were supported until iOS 9.3.5 in 2016. Due to signed OTA blobs, the iPod touch 5 can be downgraded to iOS 8.4.1 using tools such as iOS-OTA-Downgrader.
