On September 1st, 2010 the 4th generation was released. The 4th generation iPod Shuffle went back to a design similar to the iPod shuffle (2nd generation) and retained the new VoiceOver functionality that came with the prior generation. There was also support for in-line controls.

The 4th generation Shuffle supports all the music formats that iTunes supports, including Audible files.

The original release included 5 colors: Silver, Green, Blue, Orange and Pink. On September 12th, 2012, Apple refreshed their color lineup to consist of 8 color options: Silver, Black, Green, Blue, Pink, Yellow, Purple and (PRODUCT)RED. On July 15th, 2015, Apple released the final refresh for the generation with a 6 color lineup: Blue, Pink, Silver, Gold, Space Grey, (PRODUCT)RED.
